UFO Observation Report — Tarentum, Pennsylvania, 6 March 1968

This document contains the Project Blue Book file for a UFO sighting reported in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, on the evening of March 6, 1968. The witness, a 14-year-old student at West Deer High School with an interest in astronomy, reported observing a shiny, blue, mushroom-shaped object approximately 200 feet in diameter. According to the witness, the object appeared at approximately 9:15 P.M. while he was stargazing with a friend. The object reportedly hovered motionless in mid-air for about 15 minutes before the center began to spin, and it then departed at a tremendous speed over the horizon. The witness explicitly noted that the object produced no sound, exhaust, or vapor trails. The Air Force investigation, led by Major Hector Quintanilla, Jr., concluded that there was insufficient data for a formal evaluation. The file notes that no other similar reports were received from the area and that the witness failed to return the requested follow-up documentation, leading the Aerial Phenomena Office to determine that no further action was necessary.
