Project 10073 Record: Sighting near Sanford, Florida, 18 November 1966

On 18 November 1966, at approximately 0030Z, a civilian witness reported observing a triangular-shaped object near Highway 1-4, four miles south of Sanford, Florida. The witness, a 21-year-old secretary at an insurance firm, described the object as having red, white, and green lights. According to the report, the object hovered at tree-top level, disappeared toward the ground, reappeared, and then moved northward before disappearing on a vertical flight. The total duration of the sighting was estimated at two to four minutes. The weather conditions at the time were reported as partly cloudy with no fog and ten miles of visibility. The Air Force investigation concluded that the description was consistent with an aircraft, specifically a helicopter, and suggested the witness likely observed a helicopter operating over the Sanford Naval Air Station. Despite this conclusion, the report includes a note from Major Conrad L. Guevara of the DCOI Rear Echelon, stating the event was 'unexplainable by this office.' The document also notes that there were no helicopter sorties out of McCoy AFB, Florida, during the time of the sighting, and that a meteor shower was visible in the local area on 16 November 1966.
