PROJECT 10073 RECORD - Mims, Florida - 20 March 1966

On March 20, 1966, at approximately 0015 hours, a NASA employee and trained pilot driving north on Highway US#1 near Mims, Florida, observed an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The witness, who was returning from the Miami area, stopped his vehicle to observe the object more clearly. He described the object as a pulsating light that appeared as a dark blob against the sky, with colors shifting rapidly between white and intense blue at a rate of 80 to 100 alternations per minute. The witness estimated the object's altitude initially between 3000 and 4000 feet. Over the course of a 4 to 5-minute observation, the object descended in four or five distinct stages, each time lowering itself by approximately 500 feet and hovering for half a minute. During these descents, the intensity and pulsation of the light remained constant. Eventually, the object reached an altitude of 1000 to 1500 feet, hovered for approximately 90 seconds, and then accelerated rapidly in a northerly direction parallel to the highway, vanishing within 3 to 5 seconds. The witness noted that visibility was excellent and that no other traffic was present during the incident. The report was filed with Project Blue Book on April 7, 1966.
