CSAF Item 2 — Sighting Report, Charlottesville, Virginia, 27 June 1952

This document is a field report regarding an unidentified aerial phenomenon observed in Charlottesville, Virginia, on June 27, 1952. The report, authored by Fournet of AFOIN-2B3 and addressed to Ruppelt at ATIAA-5, details a sighting by a Mr. Easton and his wife at 2115 FDT. The witnesses described a yellowish-orange, oval-shaped object that appeared at approximately 45 degrees elevation in the east. The object exhibited an undulating motion and was described as being very well-defined and bright, with a size estimated to be at least twice the diameter of the object itself. The object remained under observation for about three minutes while moving slightly before disappearing behind trees. Approximately 15 minutes later, an aircraft appeared from the west at a high altitude, losing latitude and displaying flashing landing lights that were noted as definitely not being standard navigational lights. The witness, Mr. Easton, noted that the aircraft produced an essentially normal sound during its passage. He also remarked on the unusual nature of the event given the lack of a landing field or emergency strip in the immediate area. The incident was reported to local Civil Defense aircraft spotters in Charlottesville. The report notes that there were no clouds observed and the witness did not recall the presence of the moon.
