Project 10073 Record: Sighting Report - Roann, Indiana, 8 June 1966

This document is a Project 10073 record detailing a UFO sighting reported by a civilian housewife near Roann, Indiana, on June 8, 1966. The witness observed a round, reddish-orange object that appeared to float and bob in a small area before climbing toward the southeast at a high rate of speed. The observation lasted between 10 and 15 minutes. The witness was interviewed by a staff intelligence officer, who noted that while the witness appeared sincere and firm in her account, she was clearly in a state of fear. During the interview, the witness claimed that at least six other sightings had occurred within a five-mile radius of the current location since the previous fall, but these had gone unreported due to concerns about adverse publicity. Following the report, an HH43B aircraft (call sign Pedro 21) was launched from Bunker Hill AFB to investigate, but the pilot reported no UFOs observed. The official Air Force conclusion determined that the sighting was likely a B-58 aircraft using its afterburners for fuel weight reduction prior to landing at Bunker Hill AFB, a practice that can create a bright, reddish-orange appearance in the night sky.
