Flying Objects Over Fort Providence-Resolution

This document is a newspaper report from the Alaska Highway News, dated January 8, 1969, detailing a series of unidentified flying object sightings in the Fort Providence-Resolution area of the Northwest Territories. Reports of these objects first reached the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on December 18, 1968, though sightings had reportedly occurred in the two weeks prior. Witnesses included two motorists on the Providence-Rae Road and Al Goller, a school principal and acting area administrator. Mr. Goller observed the object through a 50-power telescope during clear, dark weather. He described the object as a reddish ball that shifted colors between yellow and white, noting that it appeared to have craters or spots on its surface and flared as it changed direction, suggesting the emission of gases. Another motorist reported that the object hovered over his vehicle and appeared as a stubby cigar with a rectangular, cable-like structure on top. Meteorological briefer John Panes suggested that phenomena such as occultations could create the illusion of flying saucers, and noted that the planet Venus can appear red near the horizon. Authorities also acknowledged the possibility that the sightings could be related to secret military objects.
