Giant Object Over Alaska Highway

On January 31, 1968, three witnesses observed an unidentified egg-shaped object over the Alaska Highway north of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The sighting occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. under cold, winter conditions with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees below zero and a steady 20-knot wind. The first two witnesses, Jim Jack and Tom Campbell, were traveling south in a truck when they observed the object moving from east to west, against the wind. They described the object as brick red, oval-shaped, and appearing to have a mist around it, with edges that were less solid than its center. They estimated its altitude at 5,000 feet and observed it for two to three minutes before it disappeared behind a mountain. Based on their estimates of distance and time, they calculated the object's speed at approximately 600 m.p.h. A third witness, Nick Barnett, who was driving a petroleum truck about 60 miles north of the others, also observed the object. Although he initially perceived the object as black rather than red—potentially due to the angle of the sun—his description otherwise matched that of Jack and Campbell. Barnett added that the object appeared to be flying at a 45-degree angle with the rear end lower than the front, and noted that it performed a 'terrific burst of speed' just before he lost sight of it.
