Project 10073 Record: Balloon Sighting, Indiana & Ohio, 13 February 1967

This document is a collection of records and reports regarding a sighting of an unidentified object over Indiana and Ohio on February 13, 1967. The object was reported by multiple civilian observers and tracked by various aviation authorities. The reports describe a large, silver, egg-shaped object moving toward the eastern horizon. Witnesses, including a 13-year-old, described the object as silver and round or oval. The Air Force conducted an investigation, contacting various facilities including the FAA Rapcon at WPAFB, the Holloman Balloon Control Center, and the Sulphur Grove Balloon Center. The investigation determined that a 10.6 million cubic foot high-altitude balloon had been launched from Page, Arizona, on February 12, 1967. The balloon, which was approximately 400 feet long and 20 feet in diameter, traveled across central Indiana and eventually landed near Zanesville, Ohio. Tower personnel at Indianapolis and Dayton airports confirmed the object was a high-altitude balloon. The records include a completed U.S. Air Force Technical Information questionnaire from a witness, as well as internal memos for the record detailing the verification process with various radar and control facilities.
