Project 10073 Record — Lakewood, California, 1 May 1966

This document contains a Project Blue Book record regarding a sighting reported in Lakewood, California, on 1 May 1966. Two witnesses observed a bright, white point of light with a red center moving at high speed toward the west. The witnesses estimated the object was approximately 300 miles up and moving faster than a standard jet or an X-15 aircraft. The observation lasted between 15 and 30 seconds. The witnesses, one of whom claimed to have an interest in aeronautics through correspondence with NASA, reported the incident to the Air Force. Major Hector Quintanilla, Jr., Chief of Project Blue Book, responded to the witness on 28 June 1966, stating that the initial report was insufficient for evaluation and requesting that the witness complete an FTD Form 164. The official conclusion reached by the Air Force was that the witnesses had observed an aircraft taking off from Los Angeles International Airport with its afterburners engaged, traveling on a westerly course.
