On April 11, 1966, a civilian witness in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, reported observing an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The witness, a 43-year-old male truck driver and auto mechanic, described seeing a cigar-shaped object with a blinking red light hovering 15 to 20 feet above the ground. The witness reported that the object rose and disappeared into the fog, only to reappear later at a height of 2 to 3 feet above the tree line. The witness noted that the object emitted a high-pitched whistling sound. The witness's son, who was in bed at the time, also heard the noise. The witness estimated the object to be 40 to 50 feet long and noted that it had no visible wings or wheels. The sighting lasted between two and five minutes. The witness reported the incident to the State Police in Greensburg and to a local newspaper. The official conclusion reached by the U.S. Air Force was that the object was possibly an aircraft, noting that the Pittsburgh airport is located to the west-northwest of the area and that the object's appearance and behavior were consistent with an aircraft approaching the airport.
