Project 10073 Record — Fort Carson, Colorado, 7 August 1965

On 7 August 1965, three teenage girls observed an unidentified aerial object while standing outside in the vicinity of Fort Carson, Colorado. The witnesses reported seeing a round, cigar-shaped object that was silver-white in color. The object, which appeared to emit a ray of light, was estimated to be between the size of a basketball and a vehicle tire. It was observed for approximately 5 to 10 minutes, moving in a straight line from the southeast to the southwest at an elevation of 45 to 60 degrees before disappearing behind the mountains. The sighting was reported to the Air Force and processed under Project 10073. Captain Donal Dehoff, the Assistant Base Operations Officer at Peterson Field, conducted a preliminary analysis. He noted that while the weather was generally clear, there were some clouds along the mountains. Agencies including NORAD, SPADATS, and the FAA were contacted, but no substantiating findings were produced. The report concludes that while the object's direction and duration were consistent with a satellite, its brightness made that unlikely. The investigators noted that the object did not resemble a meteor and that while an aircraft with a landing light was considered a possibility, the sighting remained in the unknown category due to a lack of additional evidence.
