UFO Sighting Report — Hendersonville, N.C., September 1963

This document consists of a U.S. Air Force sighting report (FTD SEP 63 0-329) regarding an unidentified aerial phenomenon observed in September 1963 near Hendersonville, North Carolina. The report includes a formal evaluation form and a follow-up letter dated December 11, 1964, sent to the Defense Department. The witness, a student at N.C. State, reported that he and his cousin observed a single object while standing on a mountain approximately 15 miles east of Hendersonville. The object was described as having a length of 60 feet, with a color scheme of bright semi-dark green and silver-white. It was observed flying from the northeast to the southwest, parallel to the curvature of the earth, at an altitude of approximately one-third of a mile. The witness noted that the object made no sound and exhibited a unique behavior: it approached with wings parallel to the earth and an oval shape facing upwards, then rotated around its central axis so the oval became perpendicular to the line of sight before rotating back. The report includes a hand-drawn sketch of the object. The official Air Force conclusion was that there was insufficient data for evaluation, noting that the report was second-hand and made over a year after the incident occurred, with essential data omitted.
