Project 10073 Record Card — Arlington, Massachusetts, 1 December 1962

On 1 December 1962, a student in Arlington, Massachusetts, observed an unidentified object in the late afternoon sky. The witness described the object as oblong, shaped like a frankfurter, and red in color. The object was observed for approximately three to five minutes, during which it appeared to be tumbling end over end while maintaining a straight flight path. The witness attempted to use a 30-power telescope to view the object but was unable to focus in time before the object disappeared behind trees. The observer noted that the object appeared to be about the size of a 1/16-inch screw when held at arm's length. The weather conditions were reported as clear with CAVU (Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited) visibility. A follow-up investigation conducted by the Base Operations Division concluded that the sighting was likely a high-flying jet, with the red coloration attributed to the low position of the sun in the west. Major Kenneth J. Benoit of the USAF forwarded the reports to AFSC (FTD) at Wright-Patterson AFB, noting that further investigation failed to yield additional information.
