Project 10073 Record Card — Westfield, Massachusetts, 26 May 1962

On the night of May 26, 1962, four individuals were traveling in an automobile on Route 23 in Westfield, Massachusetts, when they observed an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The witnesses, ranging in age from 15 to 19, described the object as a round, slightly oval, bright red light with a lighter, yellowish-white center. The object was reported to be emitting sparks from its top and bottom. The witnesses observed the object for approximately three to ten minutes as it performed a slow descent before disappearing behind trees. The witnesses were interviewed by TSgt Melvin Lieberman of the 99th Bomb Wing at Westover AFB. The investigation included a site visit to the location of the sighting, where the terrain and directions provided by the witnesses were verified. The official report notes that the witnesses were returning from a DeMolay affair and that the possibility of inebriation was discounted. The report also mentions that the witnesses had recently seen a television documentary about UFOs, which might have influenced their descriptions. Despite the investigation, the Air Force concluded that there was insufficient information to reach a valid conclusion, and the case was officially listed as unidentified.
