Project 10073 Record Card — 6 Miles West of Mitchel AFB, NY — 19 August 1959

This document consists of a Project 10073 record card and associated teletype communications regarding a UFO sighting reported on August 19, 1959. A civilian witness observed a single object approximately six miles west of Mitchel Air Force Base in New York at 2355Z. The witness described the object as a long, red streak, comparable in length to a telephone pole when viewed on the horizon, and noted it had a pink head with a tail when passing overhead. The object was reported to be traveling at a very high altitude and at a very high speed on a straight flight path before fading out toward the southeast. The observation lasted for approximately three minutes. The witness was in a car at the time of the sighting. Weather conditions were reported as clear with visibility of 12 miles and scattered clouds. The official evaluation, provided by Protocol Officer 1/LT Robert D. Schonbrod, concluded that the witness likely observed a high-flying jet aircraft reflecting the light of the setting sun. The report was processed in accordance with Air Force Regulation 200-2.
