The primary witness, a professor at the University of Michigan, and his wife observed a yellow-orange object while driving west on the Ohio Turnpike near exit 7 at approximately 6:00 PM. The witness described the object as having a spherical upper portion and a flat lower portion, leaving a bright, straight yellow tail that dispersed like a jet contrail. The object was observed for six minutes as it headed south. The witness also noted observing the silhouette of a conventional aircraft in the vicinity, though he stated there was no contact between the two. The report was initially filed by Special Agent Coghlan of the FBI and forwarded to the Air Force. The Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) evaluated the report and concluded that the sighting was likely a high-altitude jet aircraft, with the yellow tail being a contrail reflecting sunlight. The case was subsequently closed by the 25th District Office of Special Investigations at Selfridge Air Force Base on February 16, 1959, with no further investigation deemed necessary.
