A civilian witness reported observing a single, metallic, pear-shaped object, estimated to be the size of a B-52 bomber, hovering in the southwestern sky for approximately 15 to 20 minutes before it faded from view. In response to the reports, the Air Force scrambled jet interceptors to investigate the area; however, the pilots were unable to sight anything. The official conclusion reached by the Air Force was that the object was the planet Venus. This determination was supported by an astronomical plot and charts, which indicated that Venus was positioned in the exact location reported by the witness.
