SIGHTINGS OF UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS 10 JUNE-15 JULY 1954

This Central Intelligence Agency report compiles press accounts of unidentified flying objects observed in Finland, Norway, and Austria between June 10 and July 15, 1954. In Finland, reports from the Helsinki newspaper 'Helsingin Sanomat' describe photographs taken during and after the solar eclipse of June 30, 1954. One account details a round object photographed in Helsinki, while another describes a cigar-shaped object photographed in Maarianhamina. A third Finnish report from July 15, 1954, describes an oblong object sighted at Pulkkila, flying in the direction of Haapavesi-Nivala at a high altitude, appearing grey from the rear, and moving at the speed of an ordinary plane. In Norway, the Oslo newspaper 'Aftenposten' reported on July 6, 1954, that photographer Johnny Bjoernulf captured color motion pictures of unidentified flying objects during the solar eclipse. These objects were described as two shining disks with condensation trails moving at great speed in the direction opposite to that of the airplane from which they were filmed at an altitude of 4,500 meters. Finally, in Austria, the 'Salzburger Nachrichten' reported on June 10, 1954, that a contractor in Hallein and two other men observed a strange object over the Tennen Mountains shortly after midnight on June 7, 1954. The object was described as gleaming red, approximately three times as large as Venus, and moving spasmodically in vertical and horizontal directions for a duration of two hours.
