Project 10073 Record — Sighting in Smithtown, New York, April 1968

This document is a formal U.S. Air Force 'Sighting of Unidentified Phenomena' questionnaire regarding an incident that occurred in Smithtown, New York, in April 1968. The civilian observer, a 13-year-old, reported seeing a single, bluish light in the northeast sky at approximately 9:10 P.M. The observation lasted for only one second before the object 'blended with the sky.' The witness was accompanied by their brother and two younger brothers at the time of the sighting. In addition to the visual observation, the witness reported a strange physiological sensation, noting that their back felt as if something was tickling them, followed by a sensation of cold. The witness expressed a desire for the incident to remain private, specifically requesting that it not be reported in the newspaper to avoid being associated with people who 'make believe that there are all U.F.O.s.' The official conclusion recorded by the Air Force investigators at the Aerospace Studies Institute at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, was 'Probable Astro.'
