Project 10073 Record: Sighting at Edwards AFB, 23-24 January 1968

On the night of January 23-24, 1968, Airman Kim Degenhardt of the Security Police at Edwards Air Force Base, California, observed an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The object was described as solid, circular, and yellowish in color, with fuzzy edges. It was estimated to be roughly the size of a barracks window. The object was observed for approximately five minutes, during which time it rose in an upward arc starting from roof level, moving at a 30-degree angle to the west. The witness reported no sound associated with the object. Weather conditions at the time were clear with 30 miles of visibility. An investigation into the incident determined that there was no scheduled aircraft or balloon activity in the area at the time of the sighting. However, a Sergeant Johnson, working in the base control tower, also observed the object and provided an assessment that it appeared to be a balloon with a small light attached. Consequently, the official conclusion for the Project 10073 record categorized the event as a possible balloon with an attached light.
