Project 10073 Record — Sighting in Elkhorn, Kentucky, March 21, 1967

On March 21, 1967, at approximately 0200Z, a civilian witness in Elkhorn, Kentucky, observed six white lights in the sky. The witness, who was outside at the time, reported that the lights were initially traveling westward toward the horizon. He described the lights as appearing similar to stars but noted they were white and moved in a manner unlike jets or helicopters. The witness stated that the lights were arranged in three pairs and moved silently. After traveling for a period, the objects stopped and hovered in the air for at least one minute. The witness then summoned his mother and sister to observe the phenomenon. Following the hover, the objects broke formation and continued moving west at a slow speed before disappearing over the horizon. The witness estimated the objects were at an altitude of 2,500 feet or more and traveling at speeds between 400 and 500 miles per hour. He explicitly stated that he did not believe they were 'flying saucers' but was certain they were not conventional aircraft. The Air Force Foreign Technology Division (FTD) subsequently contacted the witness on May 3, 1967, requesting further information via FTD Form 164. The official conclusion recorded in the Project 10073 file suggested the sighting was a 'Possible (AIRCRAFT)' and attributed the phenomenon to an air refueling track located over the area, noting that aircraft on this track would be flying toward the west.
