Project 10073 Record: Southampton, Long Island Sighting Reports

This document is a collection of records from Project 10073, part of the Air Force's Project Blue Book, concerning a series of UFO sightings in Southampton, Long Island, in late October 1966. The reports involve multiple civilian witnesses, including students from Southampton College, who described seeing bright, stationary, or slow-moving lights in the sky that changed colors. One witness submitted photographs as evidence, which were subsequently analyzed by the Air Force. The analysis concluded that the photographs were not of a UFO but were instead trailed images of the moon, and that the claim regarding the date of the photographs was fraudulent. The Air Force conducted extensive inquiries with local military and government agencies, including the Suffolk County AFB, the Coast Guard, and the 104th Tactical Fighter Group, to rule out the possibility of military aircraft or helicopter activity in the area during the time of the sightings. The investigation consistently found no evidence of military involvement, and the majority of the sightings were attributed to astronomical phenomena, specifically the stars Capella and Rigel, or were deemed to have insufficient data for a comprehensive evaluation.
