Project 10073 Record: Sighting at Shemya AFS, Alaska, 22 October 1966

On 22 October 1966, three witnesses at Shemya AFS, Alaska, observed a single, basically stationary object for a total of 33 minutes. The object, described as appearing the size of a pea, exhibited variable shapes, shifting between spherical and oblong. It displayed a repeating color cycle of red, green, and white at two-second intervals. Observers noted the object moved in a square pattern, shifted up and down, and at one point rose vertically before hovering. A bright flash, likened to a camera flashbulb, was observed at 1511Z. The observers utilized both the naked eye and M-15 7x50 binoculars. A Navy P3V aircraft on routine patrol was requested to search the area but reported nothing unusual. The official conclusion reached by the ACS/1 AAC was that the sighting was consistent with an astronomical observation, noting that the description matched a similar report from King Salmon AFS on 19 October 1966. A witness later observed a planet at the same time and general direction, finding it exhibited the same phenomena.
