Project 10073 Record — Sighting Report, Fairborn, Ohio, 7 August 1966

This document is a Project Blue Book record concerning a civilian sighting in Fairborn, Ohio, on August 7, 1966. The witness reported observing an object for approximately 10 minutes that appeared redder than the sun and resembled fire rather than a 'sun ball.' The object was viewed through clouds and was described as being larger than a comet, especially at the moment it appeared to explode. The witness, who was looking westward, noted that the sun had not yet set. The official conclusion reached by the Air Force was that the sighting was likely an 'Unusual sun set,' with the sun's rays being viewed through the clouds. A follow-up letter from Major Hector Quintanilla, Jr., dated August 8, 1966, informed the witness that the initial information provided was insufficient for a full evaluation and requested the completion of an FTD Form 164. The witness provided additional details in the questionnaire, noting that the object made no sound and that it was too large to be covered by a match head held at arm's length.
