Project 10073 Record — Amarillo, Texas, 7 July 1966

On 7 July 1966, at approximately 0455Z, a civilian travelling salesman observed an unidentified object while at the Olson Park school playground in Amarillo, Texas. The witness described the object as a white light, roughly the size of a basketball, with a flat front and a tail. He noted that at one point, the object appeared to have a jet afterburner engaged. The object travelled from the south toward the northeast for a duration of 20 seconds. During the observation, the light reportedly diminished and then returned before the object disappeared abruptly, described by the witness as looking like a switch being turned off. The witness, who had reported previous sightings, also contacted the local television station, KGNC, regarding the event. The Air Force investigation, documented under Project 10073, concluded that the description was consistent with an aircraft sighting and that no other phenomena were present in the area. The Base Director of Safety noted that the witness appeared sincere in his account.
