This document is a Project 10073 record and an incoming Air Force message detailing a series of UFO sightings at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on March 23, 1966. The report, filed by Captain Russel, Assistant G-2 at Fort Jackson, describes three distinct sightings involving oval-shaped objects approximately three meters in diameter. The first sighting occurred at 0030Z, the second at 0800Z, and the third at 1100Z. Witnesses included several trainees and the Sergeant of the Guard. The objects were described as hovering at treetop height, moving straight ahead and horizontally, and appearing to follow a truck in the area. The objects were white at 0030Z and glowing yellow during the later sightings. The Air Force investigation concluded that the first sighting at 0030Z correlated with the presence of two RF4C aircraft in the area, which were conducting a low-altitude photoflash cartridge drop. However, the two later sightings remained unexplained. The report also notes that on the morning of March 24, 1966, a local television station in Charlotte, North Carolina, reported receiving fifteen calls regarding UFOs in the Charlotte and Greenville, South Carolina areas. Weather conditions at the time were reported as having transparent cirrus clouds at 28,000 feet, unlimited visibility, and no storms, with a strong temperature inversion at 1,500 feet at 1100Z.
