The witness reported observing a very bright ball of fire for approximately 15 seconds, which appeared to descend into a lake near their home. The official conclusion reached by the project was that the object was a meteor. However, the report includes significant handwritten notes from Sgt. Elliott Moore of the Ingham County Sheriff Department, who was contacted regarding the incident. Sgt. Moore noted that the lake, which had been solidly frozen, exhibited unusual conditions at the time of the report. Specifically, he observed an area of water approximately 60 feet from the shore and a dark, raised spot on the ice and snow about 200 yards from the shore. Due to poor lighting conditions, the nature of these anomalies could not be determined. Sgt. Moore requested guidance from the Aerial Phenomena Branch regarding whether he should deploy an underwater recovery team to investigate the site further.
