On October 27, 1965, at 1945Z, a civilian witness named Brent Redstone, a 15-year-old student residing in Newton Center, Massachusetts, observed an unidentified object. The witness was using 6x30 binoculars to watch an aircraft when he spotted the object. He described the object as white, saucer-shaped, and appearing the size of a pencil eraser at an elevation of 50 to 60 degrees. The object was observed moving North, performed a loop, and then disappeared. The total duration of the observation was between two and three minutes. The report was processed by the 551st Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing at Otis Air Force Base. Following an investigation, the Wing Intelligence Officer determined that the probable cause of the sighting was a weather balloon. This conclusion was supported by the fact that a weather balloon had been released from Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts—located approximately 11 miles northwest of the sighting area—at a time consistent with the observation. The report notes that weather conditions at the time were clear with unlimited visibility.
