PROJECT 10073 RECORD — Bayshore, New York, 23 October 1965

On 23 October 1965, at approximately 0120Z, a civilian witness reported a sighting of an unidentified aerial phenomenon near Bayshore, New York. The witness, while driving east on Route 27, observed a glowing, round object, described as having the diameter of a playing card, traveling at a high rate of speed over the water in a south to southeasterly direction. The observation lasted for less than five minutes. The witness contacted the Islip tower to report the object. Subsequent investigation by the 52nd Fighter Wing at Suffolk County AFB revealed that a Coast Guard aircraft was flying toward John F. Kennedy Airport with its lights on at the time of the sighting. The official conclusion reached by the Air Force was that the object was an aircraft. The report notes that several other individuals also reported the object to the Islip tower, and a KC-97 aircraft was noted to be in the area flying west at the time of the incident. The final assessment suggests that the Coast Guard aircraft was the item in question.
