Project 10073 Record — Plainview, L.I., New York, 27 August 1965

On August 27, 1965, at approximately 0300Z, a 24-year-old electrical technician from Con Avionics reported a UFO sighting in Plainview, Long Island, New York. The witness described a single, round, white object that appeared to be the size of a star but moved faster than one. The object was observed for 5 to 10 minutes, traveling from the south toward the northeast in a zig-zag path. The sighting began at an elevation of 35 degrees and ended when the object disappeared at an elevation of 15 to 20 degrees. The witness noted the object moved at the speed of an aircraft. The weather conditions were reported as clear with no wind. The Air Force investigation, conducted under Project 10073, concluded that the object was a satellite, explicitly stating it was not the Echo or Pegasus satellites. An assistant information officer from the 52nd Fighter Wing suggested that the witness's report might have been influenced by frequent media coverage of UFO sightings at the time.
