Project 10073 Record — Bangor, Maine, 4 August 1965

On August 4, 1965, at approximately 0235Z, two railroad enginemen observed four circular, dull silver objects in the sky near Bangor, Maine. The witnesses were observing lighting displays from a state fair when they noticed the objects in a close diamond formation. The objects were traveling from the North toward the South. Upon reaching a point overhead, three of the objects turned East, while one continued South. The group of three subsequently split into two separate groups before all objects disappeared instantaneously. The total duration of the observation was 45 seconds. An investigation was conducted by Captain Larry K. Asbury. The report notes that at 0224Z and 0225Z, a KC-135 and a B-52G aircraft performed water-assisted takeoffs from Dow AFB using Runway 33. These aircraft were airborne at the time of the sighting, though their crews reported no sightings. Local radar stations and the tower reported no contacts. The official evaluation concluded that the sighting was likely a reflection on jet exhaust haze from the departing aircraft, which, due to light surface winds, may have lingered in the air near the observers, reflecting lights from the state fair grounds.
