UFO Sighting Report — Washington Island, Wisconsin, June 24, 1965

This document contains a collection of reports, correspondence, and analysis regarding a UFO sighting on June 24, 1965, near Washington Island, Wisconsin. The primary witness, a 43-year-old former Seabee and shipfitter, reported observing a bright orange, cylindrical object approximately 100 feet long and 20 feet in diameter at an estimated altitude of 10,000 feet. The witness described the object as having flat ends and emitting a loud roar, similar to a jet motor. During the 20-minute observation, the witness claimed the object released five or six smaller objects that scattered in various directions. One of these smaller objects reportedly approached the witness, turning bright orange, and hovered over the Green Bay area. The witness also reported a separate, bonfire-like flare at water level near a red marker buoy. The witness attempted to document the event using a 35mm camera, but the resulting slides were largely blank or inconclusive. The report was forwarded through the Chicago Air Defense Sector to the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for analysis. Photo interpreters at the division examined the submitted slides but found no imagery of intelligence value. The official conclusion provided by the Air Force suggested that the witness may have observed a meteor exploding in front of the star Arcturus, with the image potentially transferring to the star. The visual portion of the report was referred to Dr. J. Allen Hynek for further consideration.
