Unidentified Object Report — Costa Mesa, California, 13 February 1965

This document details an incident reported by a civilian woman to the Space Systems Division (SSD) at Los Angeles on 15 February 1965. The woman reported that her 16-year-old son and four other youths were camping in the vicinity of Mt. Palomar on the night of 13 February 1965 when they encountered an intensive, highly concentrated beam of light. The light source was reportedly emitting an audible signal. When the youths approached the light, it turned directly toward them, seemingly following them as they attempted to leave the area. The youths fired several rounds of small arms ammunition at the source. The military investigation, conducted by the Space Systems Division and coordinated with the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson AFB, concluded that the object was a ground light and not a UFO. The report notes that the information was received too late to conduct an on-site investigation to verify the source of the light. The correspondence includes internal memos from the 6592D Support Group forwarding the report to the Foreign Technology Division and the Commanding Officer at Marine Air Station, El Toro, due to the proximity of the incident to their station.
