Project 10073 Record Card — Sighting Report, Susanville, California, 14 September 1963

On 14 September 1963, a witness in Susanville, California, observed two unidentified aerial objects. The witness, a man with 37 years of experience in fire detection and aircraft observation for the U.S. Forest Service, first spotted a round, sphere-like object moving in an erratic manner. Shortly thereafter, a second, cigar-shaped object with fins appeared. The round object, which the witness described as being the size of a nickel, moved at a high rate of speed to intercept the cigar-shaped object, which was described as the size of a dime. The witness observed the round object appear to attach itself to or blend into the cigar-shaped object before both disappeared from sight. The witness and his foster son, who also observed the objects, reported that there was no sound. The witness noted that the objects were translucent but not transparent, and appeared to be made of a material lighter than polished aluminum. The incident was reported to the 3635th Flying Training Wing at Stead AFB, Nevada. Despite an investigation by local officials and the submission of a detailed FTD Form 164, the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) was unable to identify the objects, and the case was officially classified as unidentified.
