Project 10073 Record Card — Sighting of 23 April 1962

This document consists of a Project 10073 Record Card and an associated Naval Message dated 23 April 1962. The report details an unidentified flying object sighting observed by personnel from COMPHIBRON ONE near Midway at coordinates 27-09N 176-34.9E. The witnesses, identified as LTJG J.E. Rohan and QM2 Burdick, both of whom were noted as completely reliable, observed the object for approximately 10 minutes. The object was described as appearing like a star or planet, white in color, and moving from west to east with a northern declination. The observation was made using surface visual methods without the aid of optical instruments. At the time of the sighting, weather conditions included a 1800-foot ceiling, 10-mile visibility, and 7/10 sky cover. The Naval Message, addressed to the Commander of the Fifth Air Force and other naval commands, confirms that a preliminary analysis identified the object as the satellite Echo.
