On September 5, 1961, at approximately 1910 local time, a civilian witness in Sidney, Ohio, observed an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The witness, who was outdoors watching for satellites, reported seeing a bright object through binoculars. The object was described as having a spear-like shape, though it appeared round at times, and exhibited flashing red and green colors. The witness noted that the object appeared to be moving around and was observed in a clear, dry sky. The witness attempted to track the object's bearing, noting it appeared at 205 degrees from true North and 45 degrees from the horizon, eventually disappearing. The witness indicated that the object appeared to disappear into an approaching storm or clouds. The U.S. Air Force investigation, documented on a Project 10073 Record Card, concluded that the object was the star Antares, which was located in the southwest and appeared to move toward the west at the time of the report.
