Project 10073 Record Card and Correspondence — Springville, New York, August 1960

This document contains a Project 10073 record card and associated correspondence regarding a UFO sighting reported by a 17-year-old civilian in Springville, New York, on August 26, 1960. The witness, a high school senior, reported observing a fuzzy white oval light with sharply outlined red lights on either side of the front. The object remained stationary for approximately one and a half minutes before suddenly moving across the sky from WSW to SE. The witness noted that no sound was heard until the object had passed, at which point the sound of a jet engine was audible. The witness observed the object using 5x35 field glasses and later with the naked eye. The witness also noted a previous sighting in 1957. The Air Force responded to the witness's inquiry on October 10, 1960, stating that the initial report contained insufficient information and requesting the completion of an official questionnaire. Subsequent internal Air Force correspondence from the Aerospace Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) suggests that the object may have been a jet or the planet Venus, which was setting at the time. The witness expressed skepticism regarding conventional explanations, stating that they did not know of anything that would look like the object they observed and maintained an open mind regarding the nature of flying saucers.
