Project 1r/3 Record Card — Rockledge, Florida, 18 February 1960

This document consists of a Project 1r/3 record card, a letter from a witness, and clippings from local newspapers regarding a sighting on February 18, 1960, in Rockledge, Florida. A civilian witness reported observing six brilliant white objects moving slowly in a 'V' formation at a great altitude. The witness, who was driving south on a river road at approximately 10:00 a.m., noted that the objects were definitely not planes. In a subsequent letter to Major Roy E. Hames, the witness elaborated that the objects appeared tubular with straight sides, were etched against a cloudless blue sky, and produced no noise or jet trails. The witness explicitly stated their belief that birds could not have been seen at that altitude. Local press coverage in the Cocoa, Florida Tribune corroborated the report, noting that other residents had seen similar objects and that the newspaper had received no definitive explanation for the sightings. While some speculation in the press suggested the objects might have been balloons released from Wallops Island, Virginia, the official conclusion recorded on the ATIC form is 'Probably birds.'
