UFO Sightings, State of Washington — Project 10073 Record Card and Related Correspondence

This document collection details a series of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) sightings reported in Washington State during July and August 1959. The sightings, which occurred in areas including Bremerton, Yakima, Bellingham, and Hoquiam, involved reports of red, green, white, blue, and yellow lights observed at night. Witnesses, including sheriff's deputies and civilians, described the objects as hovering noiselessly at high altitudes, sometimes appearing larger than airplanes. The reports generated significant local media attention, with newspapers questioning the nature of the lights and the military's response. The Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) initiated an investigation, contacting the 25th Air Division at McChord Air Force Base. The military investigation concluded that the sightings were not anomalous but were instead the result of Strategic Air Command (SAC) aircraft conducting night refueling missions and the use of flares. The Directorate of Intelligence at the 25th Air Division formally notified ATIC on September 15, 1959, that the reports were closed, attributing the phenomena to known friendly sources.
