This document collection details the investigation of a UFO sighting reported on October 17, 1958, in the Olympic National Park, Washington. A civilian witness, identified as a 37-year-old electric welder from Bremerton, reported observing a stationary, round, orange-red object that appeared to brighten and dim, and was described as being twice the size of neighboring stars. The initial report was submitted to the 25th Air Division (25 NADD) at McChord Air Force Base. Upon receiving the report, the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base found the information insufficient for a proper evaluation. ATIC requested further clarification, specifically asking for the angle of elevation, azimuth, duration of the sighting, and the identity of the observer, in accordance with Air Force Regulation 200-2. In response to this request, the 25th Air Division provided the additional data, noting that the object was first seen at an angle of 45 degrees in the northeast quadrant of the sky and remained stationary for approximately three minutes. Following this investigation, the official conclusion reached by the military authorities was that the object was likely the star Capella, which was visible in the same quadrant during the time of the observation.
