Project 10073 Record Cards: Pasadena, California Sightings (September 1956)

This document contains Project 10073 record cards and associated military communications regarding two separate UFO sightings in Pasadena, California, in September 1956. The first incident, occurring on September 6, 1956, involved a round, gray object observed by a civilian GOC member. The object was described as the size of a pea at arm's length, moving in a straight line from East to West for thirty seconds. The official conclusion for this event suggested the possibility of an aircraft. The second incident occurred on September 9, 1956, and lasted for 41 minutes. This object was described as a round, metallic white object, the size of a dime, which appeared to be in orbit moving from East to West. It was observed at an initial elevation of 45 degrees. Military personnel, including 1st Lt. Mark Matlock, were involved in the reporting process. The Los Angeles Times reported that the object moved erratically and that two jets were scrambled in response. Subsequent analysis by the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) concluded that the September 9th object was the planet Venus, noting that observers likely made errors in elevation and that the reported disappearance behind trees was a misinterpretation of the planet's position. The documentation includes military teletype messages confirming the details of the sightings and the official identification of the second object.
