Unidentified Flying Objects Observed Over Fort Belvoir, Virginia on 16 December 1953

This report details a sighting of two unidentified aerial objects over Fort Belvoir, Virginia, on the morning of December 16, 1953. Between 0530 and 0615 hours, five members of the 515th Engineer Pipeline Company observed two luminous objects. The first object was spotted at approximately 0530 at an altitude of 400 to 600 feet in a west-southwest direction. A second, smaller object became visible at 0545, appearing to be at a greater distance. Witnesses described the objects as bright, comparable to the intensity of a star, and noted that they changed colors—specifically red, blue, and green—at irregular intervals. The objects exhibited erratic, jerky movements, appearing to move closer to and further from the observers, as well as laterally. The first object disappeared beyond the horizon at approximately 0600, while the second became imperceptible as dawn light increased by 0615. A guard at the nearby Davison Army Air Field was questioned but reported no unusual sightings, and the Aviation Branch at the airfield could not provide an explanation for the objects. The report was forwarded by the 4th District Office of Special Investigations to the Director of Intelligence at Headquarters USAF. The official conclusion reached in the documentation is that the objects were likely sun dogs, based on the time and nature of the observations.
