Incident Report — Green Bay, Wisconsin, 21 February 1953

On 21 February 1953, a report was filed by Detachment 9 of the 671st Ground Observer Squadron regarding an aerial sighting in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The report details a call received at the Green Bay Filter Center at 2125 hours from a supervisor of an observation post in Sturgeon Bay. The witness, who was described as being well-versed in aerial phenomena, reported observing an object at approximately 12 degrees above the horizon. She described the object as changing colors, specifically white, red, and a flash of green, and noted that it moved away to the west, remaining in sight for approximately thirty minutes. The witness compared its size to a street light at a distance of five blocks. A second report was included from a witness in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, who observed the object at 2120 hours with her twin boys. She described it as a red light resembling the tail light of a car, appearing to be near the tip of Chambers Island and traveling northwest. She attempted to use a telescope, but the object was gone by the time she returned. Military personnel at the detachment also attempted to observe the object. The official conclusion reached by the reporting agency was that the object was the star Arcturus, noting that the long duration of the observation and the slow movement of the light were consistent with the characteristics of a bright star in that position.
