This report is submitted in accordanc e with USAF message SAF-OICC 88579 Nlay 67, which directed this headquarters to contact named individuals in the Bourbon, Missouri area who had sighte d unidentified flying objects in that area over the past iew months. Bourbon i s a small community on Highway 66, approximately 75 miles southwest of St. Louis , Missouri. The a rea of the sightings is approximately 2 and 1 I 2 miles northwest of Highway 66, and is a rural. area with homes separated by distances of a few hundred yards to one mile. Areas around the homes have been cleared and are maintained as lawns and/ or open fields. !viost of the remaining are a is i n woodland. Most of the sightings _have occurred at the home of Mrs The first sighting occurred on 8 F..;bruary 1967, and sightings have reoccurred almost nightly since that time until the present. Generally, the objects appear as a reddish glowing light the size of a large grapefruit, originating over the trees in her backyard. They some- times come out of the woodland itself, and as they approach the house can be seen to increase in light intensity , changing to a brilliant white light which bathes the area in light as though an outside house- light had been turned on. The lights hover near the ground as if searching for something and emit a fan shaped sweeping white light. On occasion the objects touch the ground and give off sparks (described as like popcorn shooting into space). The objects '.Vander back and forth at low level, sometimes drifting off into the trees o r over them, and again shooting straight up and disappearing. b . The lights have distinct form, although a solid vehicle }tas not bet::n observed. Sometimes three lights appear as a triangle, approximately five feet scpa::-ating each light. On other occasions a singl e light has been seen as an elon~atcd object with legs appro)..imate ly three feet long protruding from all !>idt. s except toward the back of the object. The legti can be withdrawn and c.<.te:1ded. The legs had white lights on the end of each one. This object emitted a whirring noise whenever it moved, and the noise stopped whenever it hovered. Mrs eported that she received a on her TV whcneve the objects were i n the area. Also, the furnrJ.ce made a yoa ring noise and acted e rraticly. She claimed that many people in the area had complained of unusual f urnance troubles. On one occasion there was a strong odor of orange peel in the outside area when the object had been s ighted. d . The objects appear regardless of the weather, being seen on clear nights as well as during rain and sleet storms. They can be seen shortly after dark, and sometimes stay throughout the night. e . Mr dog seems t o sense the objects, and barks whenever they are in the vicinity. outside to the objects. tend:; an invalid husband and is fearful of going stigate; therefore, has never attempted to approach g . There is a garden appro;dmately 100 yards from Mrs home containing rhubarb, and she claims that one one occasion the leaves were torn and burned, and some stalks pulled out of the h . She has counted as many as a dozen lights at one time hovering and flitting about her yard, in the garden and in the trees . She has observed them with binoculars through the windows, but this did not mak0 them more distinct in form. i . Mrs has been told that the area is rich i11 magnesium deposits, and that so~e foreign government is gathering the mineral, and our government should be lookb.g into t~is matter and saving it for their own use. j. Mrs . is a sister of 'Mrs and has sec 1 llt,; objects on three occasions. She describes lhe lights essentially as Mrslliiiiilllll.did. Her observations \Vere sometime in March and lasted up to 3 and 1/2 hours at a sighting. Otherwise much of h e r comment was based on what her s isle r had told her. She did em.phasize that the dogs hair stood on end when the obj ects apvroached. k . lvlrs . s two boys , ages approximately 5 and 7 years, who went out to d i spose of t h e garbage one e v ening at dusk. They came racing back to the house, s t ating that a luminous round object ad come down over the m and then zoomed off. It flared up and b ecame quite bright . There was n o noise a t the t ime, but the dogs stal"ted barking. No physical signs could be found in the area later. This incident occurred before word had gotten around that Mrs. so seen the objects. L a t e r on Mrs . lso saw lights simil a r to those described by Mr s . They moved back and forth, at a hei gh t of 20 feet down to 6 fl!et. They changed color t h ree times, changing from red to a gn:~enish color and then orange . The lights b ecame diffused when in the orange stage, covering an area of approximately 25 feet with the light. He o bserved the lights for 15 minutes and described the m as phenomenal. The Reveren hac; known Mr .for approximately six mon ths, and although not her pas o r does visit her home periodically. His home i s approximately 150 yards down the road from Mrs property. n. Th~ live about a mile hom _\1rs on the opposite side of the road, and about 1/2 mile off the highway. There is a junkyard across .from the entrance to their side road which can be seen from their prop~rly. About a month ago Lhey had guests one evening, and as they were leaving at 9 :30 p . m. they comm~nted on the bright car headlights a t the junkyard. There are no radio or t e levision towers in the area. The lights could not be sightings of planets as they move around, and were at various elevations . Initially, the sightings were made without knowledge that o ther people had had s i milar experiences. Although there are arm p onds th roughout the area, the land is generally at same elevation and is d r y and rocky. This, therefore, should rule out swamp gas. Fireflys are also ruled out as these sightings occurre d initially in rathe r cold weather. was impressed by Mr sincerity and i n terest in this matter. While most o.f the people spoke to wer e elderly, they were not senile . They were all very rational, and wer e curious as to what th i s unusual phenomena might be. I feel that it is especially significant that a minister would confirm these s i ghtings, and could vouch for Mrs character . S.
