USAFFactSheet95-03 UnidentifiedFlyingObjectsandAirForce Project BlueBook From 1947 to 1969, the Air ForceinvestigatedUnidentifiedFlying Objects underProjectBlueBook. Theproject,headquarteredat Wright-PattersonAir Force Base, Ohio, wasterminatedDec. 17, 1969. a totalof12,618sightingsreported to Project Blue Book, 701 remained"unidentified." ThedecisiontodiscontinueUFOinvestigationswas based on an evaluation ofa reportpreparedby the University ofColoradoentitled,"Scientific StudyofUnidentifiedFlyingObjects;"areviewofthe University ofColorado'sreport by the National AcademyofSciences;previousUFOstudiesand Air ForceexperienceinvestigatingUFO reports during the 1940s,'50sand'60s. As aresult oftheseinvestigations,studies and experience gained frominvestigatingUFOreportssince 1948, theconclusions ofProject BlueBookwere:(1)no UFO reported,investigatedandevaluatedby the AirForcewas ever anindication ofthreatto our national security; (2) there was noevidence submittedto ordiscoveredby the Air Force that sightings categorized as"unidentified"represented technologicaldevelopmentsorprinciplesbeyondthe range ofmodemscientificknowledge;and (3) there was noevidenceindicatingthatsightingscategorizedas "unidentified" wereextraterrestrial Withthetermination ofProjectBlueBook, the Air Force regulationestablishingandcontrollingthe programforinvestigatingandanalyzingUFOs was rescinded.DocumentationregardingtheformerBlue Bookinvestigationwaspermanentlytransferredto the ModernMilitaryBranch,NationalArchivesand RecordsService,EighthStreet andPennsylvaniaAvenue, N.W.,Washington,D.C. 20408, and is availableforpublicreviewand analysis. Since thetermination ofProjectBlueBook, nothing has occurred thatwouldsupporta resumptionof UFOinvestigationsby the Air Force. Given thecurrentenvironmentofsteadilydecreasingdefense budgets,it isunlikelythe Air Force would become involved in such a costlyprojectin theforeseeable Thereare anumber ofuniversitiesandprofessionalscientificorganizationsthat haveconsideredUFO phenomenaduringperiodicmeetingsand seminars.
