Krog FOIA and Privacy Act Officer Enclosure: Releasable Document (( Title: ZEALAND UFOS HEAD: New Zealand Air Force Opens Its UFO File NUMBER: 371842 TYPE: CN )) New Zealand has opened up more than 50 years' worth of previously secret air force files on unidentified flying objects, providing a trove of material for those seeking evidence the earth is being visited by aliens. More than 2,000 pages of material dating from 1952 were released Wednesday in response to requests under freedom of information laws. The names of individuals have been redacted. The material ranges from dubious reports from individuals claiming to have met aliens in "pharaoh masks" to more difficult-to-explain sightings by airline pilots and air force officers. Officials said Wednesday that the air force has not investigated or substantiated the sightings. Among the reports is a thick file on a sighting of lights near the New Zealand town of Kaikoura in 1978. The sighting was filmed by a TV New Zealand crew and made international headlines at the time. The documents quote investigators offering various natural explanations for the lights.
