An investigation conducted by the undersigned has failed to posi~ively identify the object sighted over the Georgetown area of Wa gton, D. C. at 2200 hours (local) 22 August 1967. 3. However, I was able to locate a Washington, D. C. policeman who sai~ the ob ect looked like a flare (red, railroad flare). of Av~nue, Oxon Hill, Maryland stated that he was on duty in the Georgetown area on 22 August 1967. He observed an object which he described as an intense red light, like a flare. He sai:! he could not see anything above or belo\-1 the light. Ha said he fi~3~ saw the light afte r noticing othe r groups of people looking up in~'"' the sky. The object made no sound. He said it was almost over- head and eared to go up and out of sight. At the time of the sig~ting was standing on the corne r of Wisconsin and Q Streets in :he District. 4. Crist stated that his first r eaction to the object was that it was a :la~e. He also state d that anothe r policeman told him he had seen the sa~e object thre e nights in a row (21, 22 and 23 ~ugust 1967). I have not been able to locate the othe r policeman. 5. 1 discussed with r~3u1t of a prank. s.:-.~ :he object. the possibility of this object b eing the a~d that WaS \That he thought it \-laS when he t o watch for the object to appear again and l e t me v.o...::~, a nd '"ould also advise the other policemen in 7. It is my opinion that the object sighted over Georgetown on 22 August 1967 was either a red light or a red flare attached to a large balloon released by someone as a hoax. I plan to take no further ac~io~ unless the object reappears. w:r-~dn D. NIELSEN, 1st Lt, USAF u70 Investigative Officer Copy to: University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado 80302 ATTN: Dr. Condon
