Descript i on: weather observer (Comments in parenthesis at the same location) Shape: Illuminated cross. Cross pieces appeared to be medium thin, of equal lenght. Row of lights on a cross or plus) Size: Smaller than a hand at arms len~. (Ten t i me s bigger than pibol light as seen through a theodolite) Color: Clear Hhite l ight. It could be possible chat the object was a bigger plastic bag than i s ordinarily used, with at least 20 candles instead of the usual one. However, it i s interest- ing to note that the lights went ou t instantly and simutaneously, something that would be hard to achieve with candles. Wind direction, while not exactly in the same direction as the flight of the object, was in the same general direction and indeed may have been in the same direction at some altitude below 10,000'. possibility: An ordinary weather type battery powered light devices s~tspend The hula hoop effect may have been suspension lines cutting into the (2) Another balloon tvith ed under it. caused by the (3) Third possibility: A plasma of ionized air. The orange color is about the same as a lmv energy plasma. The manner in 'tvhich the lights 't7ent out migh t indicate the plasma suddenly lost its electrical charge. Ho.;ever, the cross effect might not be equated with a plasma phenomena. (4) These ideas are pure speculation and at the moment cannot be supported by evidence. Similar lights, although not cross shaped, have been report- ed over t:.-te i slands of Havzaii, Haui and Oahu during the last 3 years. In all instances they have been listed as u nknown since we could not find a reason for them. Indeed, in most cases we ruled them insignifica~t according to the criteria of AFR 80- 17. Hmvever, t hey are being seen by the public and 'tve cannot find a reasonable explanation. Some of them hoa~es, but not all, because the locations of some o= the sightings, such as the remote sides of volcan~es and over water areas between some of the islancs are not logical launching points for pranksters . .:ust rece:."ed is another man' s opinion. llilo has CAB approva l for direct flights from ~R~'!. :V~.
