We vi.ab'to' thank you tor reporting yau:r obs~nation to the Wright-Patterson Air Force B~se Aeronautical Technical Intelligence Center Dayton, Ohio Dear Sirs:. LastJyly 8th, 1966, I witnessed a r~ther bizarre aerial phenomenon directly west of my home town of Ladd. Until now have tried to dismiss t his from my mind as being some type of optical illusion or an astigmatic abrasion on my part. most a week ago, I overheard two older gentlemen and a younger man d iscussing this phenomenon in a restaurant in the to\vn of DePue, Illinois, which is the town in \vhich I am nn English and social studies teacher in the local high school According to their discussion, the phenomenon occured "about the first \'reek in July of this year" and was also witnessed by several people in the vicinity of Princeton,Illinois, which is bet,Jeen six ecl ten !Diles northr.est of DePu e . Ny own home to,m o f Ln.dd is approxi!Jately ten miles northeast of DePue. \'/i thin t hlu triangle, i t see:ned tha t from the discussions and the des- criptions I overheard, it was most likely the same phenomenon which all of us witnessed. The people in Princeton said the thing occured almost directly over them and to the ea.st slightly, the people fro~ De?ue said it looked like the thing was directly north of them, and I Hi tnes sed the bl ts thing a.s happenin g to the due WI'!St fro:t -:ny ho:ne to\oln of Ladd. 'rh~ pheno::;3enon itself seemed to be some\:hat l i k e a shooting stqr; I have seen three so far in my life. However, the three s!:ootl ng s tar3 h' ....... ~ch I have witnessed left a. traceable trail of Hhlte, 1'orrnin3 3 w~ite threadlike p ath directly behind. This phe~1cmenon i n ~eneral made a curved arc in the sky traveling in ,.;h;\t I consi:!ered to be almost 9 direct north-south direction. Another somet~hat astounding thing that m11de me re:nember the entire soli t-secorr.i occurence \vas that the arc-shaned nath ,.;as d iscernable to me for approximately a second' o r probe.biy t;:o' and a long with t h i s , the width of the path \vhich Ha s made I estimated to be at one to one and one-half inches wide. The coloring of the trail was of a pale or dull gold, not yelloH-gold, but more along the line of th~ type o f " st!:>r du3t used by studer.t s i~ the constr.lct.io!': o:-. ~:1a annual " Bt..ddy Poppy Posters" sponsored by the ?~'Llerican Legion. \li th all this talk i n pgpers and in magazines about the " flying squcers", etc., I understand your subsequent stand on security con- cerning these mgtters and h ave only divulged this hP..ppening to one other perso~, who promised not to say abything .
