One o them (part b) received widespread head- li:ie s in Ha'"..;aii resulting in increased reporting and pu'!J- li~ity regarding UFO's . a . On 3 Augudc, 0600Z (~2000 local) a family living in Waikiki beach reported bright lights rr.oving across the sky at high altitude s and on various h eadings. The lights ap?eared to change colors from red to blue. During the t c!ephonc conversation with the famil.y > I was able to ob- 5 2::--,e the sky froo a position approxi.,1ately 7 miles from :~s iki. I saw no~hing except so~e bright staYs. Since no one else reported the lights, even though they report edly w~=e flying over a heavily populated area, I COi1.sider the r2?or t to be non-significant . b. On 4 August, 0644Z (3/2044 lccal) n umerous sight- ings ~vere made of an object tJhich fell fro:n the sky south- ~vest of Oahu. The reports differed on the col ors bLc 3 11 o greed that it was a v ::.ry brighc li~ht. Ttvo pilots r.v:~o were flying at 31,000' on the 2080 radia l 1 8 0 :t-~1 out o Honolulu VORTAC said it ~Jas .bri3ht enough to illuminate the cockpit as it fell to the north of them. Both pilots believed that it burned out before hitting the ~later. Obsar~2rs from ~he Pacific missile ra~ge said it appeared to t:12::1 to l oo!c lil\:e a r e -entry ve~1::.cle. The tHo pilots saiG. i!: finally bro!~e into three p..:.cccs before it burned out. Our investigai:io:;. reve:1le J t, . .:lt it could I'..OC have b en fra-n U. On l~ August at 12302 (approx:i.mately) t h e crew o [ a TAC C-130 enroute from Travis AFB to Hie! :ll'1l AFB observe d a higl1 a ltitude, high spee d UFO pass d i rectly o\ er h c::ld on heading 2290. Location of the aircraft us 125tJ t o 128W- 35N, altitude 20,000'. Object was a bright light. (1) Ocean station Nove~er sighted the same ob- ject and reported that it lit up the Hhole sky as it passed o ve::-:-tead. (2) Investigation revealed that it ~7a~ probably an A~las missile fired from Vandenburg AFB. The bright lig~t over ocean station November resulted from a flash f~re from fuel still left in the booste r on separation. Ti:::e of the missile firing tvas 1243Z. This tvas 13 minutes lat~= chan the sighcing reported by the aircraft. How- eve:.-, the aircrew was not exactly sure of th2 time . There- fore, I believe the sighting and the missile flight ~/ere in fact one and the same. d. On 5 August, at 13112, several aircraft at 28-33N/ 11~5~1', reported a rocket firing from the surface of the ocean. The object climbed rapidly a&.'ld fle into the clouds on heading C49. One aircraft also reported a gro~p of five ships ~vithin the are a of the launch. (1) A query to CINCPACFLT OPS PLOT reveale d that the sighting was probably a navy operation being conducted in that area at that time. e. Also on 5 August at OSOOZ, a teenager reported a bright light in the sky. Since no other details r.ve:r-e available, and no other reports made, the sightinG was ruled non-significant and no investigation was made. 2.
